How does the NRCB determine if groundwater or surface water are being contaminated?
NRCB approval officers, inspectors, and science and technology staff use the environmental risk screening tool to determine if groundwater or surface water could be affected by leakage from a manure storage facility.
If a risk is identified, the operator is required to install a groundwater monitoring system and report the results to the NRCB. If the CFO was already required to monitor groundwater, the monitoring requirements may be increased.
If monitoring confirms that contamination is occurring, the NRCB uses enforcement action to address the risk.
