Springbank reservoir now operational following 2021 NRCB public interest approval

The Springbank off-stream reservoir (SR1) is now operational, providing critical flood protection to Calgary and surrounding communities.

In 2021, the NRCB released a decision finding that the proposed reservoir was in the public interest, after a robust process to review the project.

The NRCB released its decision 53 working days following the close of an 11-day virtual public hearing on the matter. The NRCB panel received submissions from 12 separate parties (both groups and individuals) and heard testimony from more than 50 witnesses during the course of the hearing, which was livestreamed to the public.
